Card Grading Guide
Professionally graded cards are sealed in a tamper-evident plastic case (a “slab”) by an independent third party. The grade tells you exactly what condition the card is in — removing any guesswork when buying.
Why Does Grading Matter?
- Protects the card permanently in a sealed case
- Verifies the card is authentic (not a fake or reprint)
- Adds significant value — a PSA 10 can be worth 5–20× a raw card
- Makes buying and selling easier — condition is certified and transparent
Grade Scale
Grading Companies
The most widely recognised grading company worldwide. Highest liquidity — easiest to buy and sell.
💡 A PSA 10 commands the highest premium of any grader for most cards.
Uses a subgrade system (Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface) so you know exactly where a card scored.
💡 BGS 9.5 Black Label (all subgrades 9.5+) is extremely rare and highly valued.
Popular for vintage cards. Clean, minimalist slab design. Faster turnaround than PSA.
💡 SGC has become more popular with modern collectors due to competitive pricing and turnaround.
Originally comic book graders, now expanding into trading cards. Growing collector base.
💡 CGC is known for very consistent, fair grading standards.
Common Questions
Can a graded card be tampered with?
Modern slabs have tamper-evident seals. If the case is cracked or the seal broken, the grade is invalidated. Never buy a cracked slab at full graded price.
What's "raw" vs "graded"?
A raw card is ungraded — just a loose card. A graded card is sealed in a slab with an official grade assigned.
Is a PSA 9 worth buying?
Absolutely. A PSA 9 is a Mint card and for most sets is far more valuable than the raw equivalent. Only for the most valuable cards does the jump to PSA 10 justify the price difference.
Do you guarantee the grade?
All graded slabs we sell are exactly as listed — the grade is assigned by the grading company and visible on the slab. We cannot alter or dispute grades.
